Atletico Madrid will leave the legendary Vicente Calderon Stadium to play at the Estadio Olímpico de Madrid (Olympic Stadium of Madrid), commonly known as La Peineta.

The Estadio Olímpico de Madrid was inaugurated in 1994 to hold athletic events. With a capacity for 20,000 spectators, then became a multipurpose stadium.

It was in the year 2008 when the stadium became Atletico Madrid property and the club decided that La Peineta would become their club’s new home. The idea was that the club would move there in the season 2012.2013, but this has not still happened.

In September 2013 the city of Madrid was not chosen to hold the Olympic Games in 2020 so this changed plans. For example, the running track surrounding the pitch was not built eventually.

After this it was decided that La Peineta Stadium will only be exclusive for Atletico Madrid. The stadium will have a capacity for 73,000 spectators, 18,000 more seats than the vicente Calderon. The club will move to the stadium in July 2016.

In football and all sports it is very typical for teams or their fans to have a nickname. Often we use these nicknames a lot but we don’t know where they come from. The most well-known nicknames in Spanish football are ‘culés’, for Barcelona and their fans, ‘merengues’, for Real Madrid, and ‘colchoneros’, for Atletico Madrid.

Atletico Madrid, one of the most successful Spanish Football teams, are also known as the ‘rojiblanco’ (red and white) team and as the ‘colchonero’ team (mattress team). The nickname ‘colchonero’ is undoubtedly one of the most curious and funny names in Spanish football.

The history of the name ‘colchonero’ goes back to the post-Spanish Civil War period. At that time, the fabric of mattresses was white and red stripes, like Atletico Madrid’s kit, so their rivals started to use the term ‘colchoneros’ when talking about the club.

Nowadays this name is totally ingrained in the club: ‘colchonero’ is an identifying mark of Atlético. Moreover, the nickname ‘colchonero’ is commonly used in sports journalism, as well as ‘rojiblancos’ or ‘indios’. ‘Colchoneros’ is, definitely, something that all Atletico fans are proud of.

Vicente Calderon stadium holds 55.000 spectators and just 10.000 are for general public and for members without seats. If you are general public you don’t have discount when booking your tickets and the maximum number of tickets you can purchase is 10. If you buy tickets for pairs or groups of less than 10 people your providers will try to seat all of you together but this is not guaranteed as it depends on availability.

Ticket prices are not always the same. They vary depending on the zone of the stadium and the category (A, B, C and D). The highest prices (category A) are for games such as the ‘Derby’ between Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid. Whereas, matches listed as D, have the lowest prices.

The amount of tickets available to buy for every match is not too large, but the new system of “Servicio de Cesión de Abono” (Free seat) means that the amount of available seats is increasing: members who can not go to the stadium for a match give up their seat to the club, who put it on sale for that game.
